    Automated Top View Registration of Broadcast Football Videos

    In this paper, we propose a novel method to register football broadcast video frames on the static top view model of the playing surface. The proposed method is fully automatic in contrast to the current state of the art which requires manual initialization of point correspondences between the image and the static model. Automatic registration using existing approaches has been difficult due to the lack of sufficient point correspondences. We investigate an alternate approach exploiting the edge information from the line markings on the field. We formulate the registration problem as a nearest neighbour search over a synthetically generated dictionary of edge map and homography pairs. The synthetic dictionary generation allows us to exhaustively cover a wide variety of camera angles and positions and reduce this problem to a minimal per-frame edge map matching procedure. We show that the per-frame results can be improved in videos using an optimization framework for temporal camera stabilization. We demonstrate the efficacy of our approach by presenting extensive results on a dataset collected from matches of football World Cup 2014

    Recovery Time Considerations in Real-Time Systems Employing Software Fault Tolerance

    Safety-critical real-time systems like modern automobiles with advanced driving-assist features must employ redundancy for crucial software tasks to tolerate permanent crash faults. This redundancy can be achieved by using techniques like active replication or the primary-backup approach. In such systems, the recovery time which is the amount of time it takes for a redundant task to take over execution on the failure of a primary task becomes a very important design parameter. The recovery time for a given task depends on various factors like task allocation, primary and redundant task priorities, system load and the scheduling policy. Each task can also have a different recovery time requirement (RTR). For example, in automobiles with automated driving features, safety-critical tasks like perception and steering control have strict RTRs, whereas such requirements are more relaxed in the case of tasks like heating control and mission planning. In this paper, we analyze the recovery time for software tasks in a real-time system employing Rate-Monotonic Scheduling (RMS). We derive bounds on the recovery times for different redundant task options and propose techniques to determine the redundant-task type for a task to satisfy its RTR. We also address the fault-tolerant task allocation problem, with the additional constraint of satisfying the RTR of each task in the system. Given that the problem of assigning tasks to processors is a well-known NP-hard bin-packing problem we propose computationally-efficient heuristics to find a feasible allocation of tasks and their redundant copies. We also apply the simulated annealing method to the fault-tolerant task allocation problem with RTR constraints and compare against our heuristics

In the past few years, there has been an increasing awareness of the role of tobacco use in the prevalence and severity of periodontal disease. Like other health professions, dentistry has taken a stand against cigarette smoking. Dentists can use a variety of smoking cessation techniques to prevent the oral health problems associated with tobacco use. To carry out a minimal programme of antismoking measures, dentists in general practice can serve as a non-smoking role model for their patients, provide information about the health hazards of smoking, give advice and guidance, refer patients to cessation programmes, recommend cessation measures and monitor patients’ effort to quit smoking. Dental practice in 21st century has to increasingly move from a restorative orientation to one of a broader promotion of health and wellbeing

    Non-resonant microwave absorption studies of superconducting MgB_2

    Non-resonant microwave absorption(NRMA) studies of superconducting MgB_2 at a frequency of 9.43 GHz in the field range -50 Gauss to 5000 Gauss are reported. The NRMA results indicate near absence of intergranular weak links. A linear temperature dependence of the lower critical field H_c1 is observed indicating a non s-wave superconductivity. However, the phase reversal of the NRMA signal which could suggest d-wave symmetry is also not observed.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

    Coexistence of para and ferromagnetic phases of Fe3+ in undoped CdZnTe (Zn r-v 4%) crystals

    The signatures of the coexistence of para and ferromagnetic phases for the Fe3+ charge state of iron have been identified in the low temperature electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra in undoped CdZnTe (Zn ~ 4%) crystals and independently verified by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID)and AC susceptibility measurements. In the paramagnetic phase the inverse of AC susceptibility follows the Curie-Weiss law. In the ferromagnetic phase the thermal evolution of magnetization follows the well-known Bloch T3/2 law. This is further supported by the appearance of hysteresis in the SQUID measurements at 2 Kbelow Tc which is expected to lie in between 2 and 2.5 K

    Ethyl gallate isolated from phenol-enriched fraction of Caesalpinia mimosoides Lam. Promotes cutaneous wound healing: a scientific validation through bioassay-guided fractionation

    The tender shoots of Caesalpinia mimosoides Lam. are used ethnomedically by the traditional healers of Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka (India) for the treatment of wounds. The current study was aimed at exploring phenol-enriched fraction (PEF) of crude ethanol extract of tender shoots to isolate and characterize the most active bio-constituent through bioassay-guided fractionation procedure. The successive fractionation and sub-fractionation of PEF, followed by in vitro scratch wound, antimicrobial, and antioxidant activities, yielded a highly active natural antioxidant compound ethyl gallate (EG). In vitro wound healing potentiality of EG was evidenced by a significantly higher percentage of cell migration in L929 fibroblast cells (97.98 ± 0.46% at 3.81 μg/ml concentration) compared to a positive control group (98.44 ± 0.36%) at the 48th hour of incubation. A significantly higher rate of wound contraction (98.72 ± 0.41%), an elevated tensile strength of the incised wound (1,154.60 ± 1.42 g/mm2), and increased quantity of connective tissue elements were observed in the granulation tissues of the 1% EG ointment treated animal group on the 15th post-wounding day. The accelerated wound healing activity of 1% EG was also exhibited by histopathological examinations through Hematoxylin and Eosin, Masson’s trichome, and Toluidine blue-stained sections. Significant up-regulation of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant contents (reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase) and down-regulation of oxidative stress marker (lipid peroxidation) clearly indicates the effective granular antioxidant activity of 1% EG in preventing oxidative damage to the skin tissues. Further, in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of EG supports the positive correlation with its enhanced wound-healing activity. Moreover, molecular docking and dynamics for 100 ns revealed the stable binding of EG with cyclooxygenase-2 (−6.2 kcal/mol) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (−4.6 kcal/mol) and unstable binding with tumor necrosis factor-α (−7.2 kcal/mol), suggesting the potential applicability of EG in inflammation and wound treatment

    The RAS family of proteins is among the most frequently mutated genes in human malignancies. In ovarian cancer (OC), the most lethal gynecological malignancy, RAS, especially KRAS mutational status at codons 12, 13, and 61, ranges from 6-65% spanning different histo-types. Normally RAS regulates several signaling pathways involved in a myriad of cellular signaling cascades mediating numerous cellular processes like cell proliferation, differentiation, invasion, and death. Aberrant activation of RAS leads to uncontrolled induction of several downstream signaling pathways such as RAF-1/MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase), PI3K phosphoinositide-3 kinase (PI3K)/AKT, RalGEFs, Rac/Rho, BRAF (v-Raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homolog B), MEK1 (mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase 1), ERK (extracellular signal-regulated kinase), PKB (protein kinase B) and PKC (protein kinase C) involved in cell proliferation as well as maintenance pathways thereby driving tumorigenesis and cancer cell propagation. KRAS mutation is also known to be a biomarker for poor outcome and chemoresistance in OC. As a malignancy with several histotypes showing varying histopathological characteristics, we focus on reviewing recent literature showcasing the involvement of oncogenic RAS in mediating carcinogenesis and chemoresistance in OC and its subtypes
